The First Commandment: Exodus 20:1-3, Lord's Day 34 of the
Heidelberg Catechism. "No Other Gods" This message explores the
challenge of how to love God's law without becoming legalistic, and what
it means to be loyal to the true and living God.
The Second Commandment: Exodus 20:4-6; Lord's Day 35 of the
Heidelberg Catechism. "A Jealous God?" What does it mean that the
LORD is a jealous God? Are we as jealous for His glory as He is jealous
for our love?
The Third Commandment: Exodus 20:7; Lord's Day 36 of the Heidelberg
Catechism. "Using God's Name" There's a note of warning in this
commandment. Are we listening? Do we love God with the wonderful gift
of speech/communication?
The Fourth Commandment Exodus 20:8-11; Hebrews 4:1-13; Lord's
Day 38 of the Heidelberg Catechism. "What Shall We Do On The Lord's
Day?" God gave His people a common day of rest. What a blessing
when we and other believers can so order our lives that we too may
have common times of rest -- for fellowship, worship, and to do works of
mercy.
The Fifth Commandment: Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6; Lord's Day 39 of
the Heidelberg Catechism. "A Command With A Promise" The principle
of honoring one another applies to more than children as they relate to
their parents. Such respect leads to the good life: "that it may go well
with you...."
The Sixth Commandment: Exodus 20:13; 1 John 3:11-15; Matt. 5:21-24;
Lord's Day 40 of the Heidelberg Catechism. "The Root of Murder"
Murder doesn't just happen. It arises from deciding to hate people who
bear God's image. There is a better way!
The Seventh Commandment: Exodus 20:14; Prov. 6:24-34; Matt.
5:27-32; Lord's Day 41 of the Heidelberg Catechism. "Serving God In
Strong Relationships" God gave us rules that teach us to build strong
relationships. The 7th commandment calls us to "die" to what weakens
marriages, and to "come alive" to what makes marriages strong.
The Eighth Commandment: Exodus 20:15; Lord's Day 42 of the
Heidelberg Catechism. "Give And Take" Some people mostly take from
others. God teaches us to receive His blessings and to give/share. It's
the way of love!
The Ninth Commandment: Exodus 20:16; Psalm 15; Lord's Day 43 of the
Heidelberg Catechism. "Loving To Tell The Truth" Being honest is more
than doing what is "right". It keeps relationships open and strong!
The Tenth Commandment: Exodus 20:17; Psalm 19:7-14; Lord's Day 44
of the Heidelberg Catechism. "The Heart of Obedience" In a unique
way, the command not to covet probes our hearts. Thankfully God can
change our hearts, so that we may serve Him (and each other) at the
level of our desires.
